Cork’s newest GAA club St. John’s hosting of the 2013 All-Ireland and International Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships is part of Ireland’s biggest sheep and wool festival to be hosted on Saturday/Sunday, May 25/26 at the Green Glens International Complex, Millstreet Town, Co. Cork.
The event will include competitors and spectators from all over Ireland and Britain, mainland Europe, and as far away as Australia and New Zealand, including women shearers who will compete for the Irish and International ‘Queen of the Shears’ titles.
The festival in its 61st year is described one of Ireland’s premier agricultural, country and family festivals, promising to bring a massive influx of visitors to the North West Cork location. That will give a massive boost for tourism in terms of revenue for the entire region and surrounding towns and villages.
The hosting returns to the Green Glens Complex for the first time since 1982, a multi purpose venue that has staged an array of international events over the years from the Eurovision Song Contest, world title boxing to World Cup Horse Shows and a bevy of other events.
The All-Ireland and International Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships promises to be a major showcase event for trade, craft and food exhibitors. Organisers St. John’s GAA draw its members from the Aubane and Kilcorney areas of the Southern Duhallow close to Millstreet Town, The Butter Road and Millstreet Country Park.
The sheep industry is an important part of the fabric of rural Ireland and we are confident that the Co. Cork hosting will the best yet and will attract a huge audience to see the top Irish and international shearers in action.
